Somerset: 200 Years of Shared History

In 2025, Somerset marked an extraordinary milestone — 200 years since the town was incorporated at the foot of the Boschberg mountain.

Looking back over two centuries, it’s clear that this area carries a rich and layered history. From the early Khoi inhabitants to the arrival of European settlers — first the Dutch and later the English — Somerset has grown into a true melting pot of cultures, stories, and traditions.

A Town of Many Names

Over the years, the town’s name has evolved along with its people. What began simply as Somerset later became Somerset East, and more recently KwaNojoli — each name reflecting a chapter in our shared journey.

To honour this past and celebrate what lies ahead, Blue Crane Tourism hosted a community sporting event in 2025, bringing together residents from Pearston, Cookhouse, and KwaNojoli in a spirit of unity and celebration.

A Day to Remember

The day began on a stirring note with Lindelwa’s beautiful rendition of the South African National Anthem, performed at both the Aeroville Sports Grounds and Victoria Park. She is truly an asset to our town.

Local sports clubs turned out in force, and the event featured soccer, rugby, netball, and chess. Teams from across the district municipality competed — not for trophies, but for fun, connection, and community pride.

The chess players were particularly busy, playing over 200 games throughout the day!

Looking to the Future

As we reflect on the past 200 years, we’re also looking ahead with optimism and excitement. This celebration was not just about remembering where we’ve come from, but about setting the tone for the generations to follow.

What will they think of our contribution, 200 years from now?

If you’d like to be part of Somerset’s ongoing story, keep an eye on upcoming community events — or better yet, come and experience the heart of Blue Crane Country for yourself.
